cicada killer wasp(SpheSphecius speciosusey Features That Match: • Black body with large yellow bands (Asian giant hornets have orange heads and more orange/yellow striping). • Reddish-brown wings (common in cicada killers). • Head and thorax darker, without the bright orange “helmet” look of a hornet. • Very large size (these can look intimidating, but they are solitary wasps). Behavior & Safety: • Cicada killers look scary but are generally not aggressive toward people. • The females use their sting to paralyze cicadas, which they bring back to underground burrows to feed their larvae. • Males can act territorial but cannot sting at all.
