@byjacklynn: These are clips from my visit to catacombs 1, 10 and 14 at St Paul’s catacombs in Rabat Malta! This ancient site dates back to the 3rd century CE (around 1,700 years old). Here is a quick timeline - Origin: The catacombs began as part of a Roman era burial ground outside the city of Melite (modern Mdina). Roman law forbade burials within city walls, so underground cemeteries were built outside the city walls. Christian use: By the 4th century CE, Christians in Malta were using the catacombs as communal burial spaces and places of remembrance. Multi-faith burial: There is evidence that pagans, Jews, and Christians were all buried there, often side by side, reflecting Malta’s diverse population and cohabitation. Later use: The catacombs were used extensively until at least the 7th century CE, after which burials shifted elsewhere! #ancienthistory #maltatravel #catacombs
