me when I disliked Materialists and Eddington and a lot of people couldn't fathom I had a different, negative opinion than they did.

I always push back when folks call me or other content creators a critics. I think you can post and engage critically with something without being a critic- though there are some great critics on here too! I was sad about lay off at vanity fair as well, with some great film critics loosing their job. Feels like movie companies would much rather prioritize a fan they think is gonna say their film is a 10 out of 10 then a critic that would say anything constructive or critical

The other end of this too is people are so damn insecure about their taste in media that they need to constant validation and positive reinforcement in everything they watch or love. I have seen people give 1 star reviews for podcasts simply because some said they disliked their favorite movie. People also do not know how to engage with criticism or on the end, give criticism in a constructive manner. It’s very black and white “good media” “bad media” with quips thrown in at detractors half the time.

people freak out when you dont like the things they do. not allowed to just not like things even with valid criticism without a total freak out

Influencers, by and large, have no editorial staff, no code of ethics, no lawyers to vet their content. It was inevitable that studios would manipulate them heavily to follow the party line and use it for marketing. Audiences need to gain better discernment on how this all works so we can distinguish who loves films more that money, free stuff and being allowed to go to the next premiere

in 2014 people attempted to doxx me and I recieved death threats because I criticized Dragon Age Inquisition for being buggy, inconsistent quality voice acting, and having gameplay that lacked direction. Video Game criticism is in a similar spot

Of course we want cheerleaders over critics. Deep analysis and praise of a work of art is just superior in every regard than just roasting something. Theres less utility and need for a critic to give their 10 minute review when people can just research the film on their own and watch clips online.

I don't know if this is the answer, but does it feel like someone was obsessing over Rotten Tomatoes and was like...if we only have audience scores our movies look great! Can't have a bad critic RT score if there's no critics....so no more critics.

Wasn’t there some influencers screenings for something recently but the critics could review before embargo lift if they gave only positive reviews? I wish I could remember which film but yes it’s pretty clear what’s happening

i was thinking about it when I saw the reviews for eddington. while some publications did have negative reviews that I agreed with most were overwhelmingly positive as were the users reviews. not to say I am right and everyone else is wrong but I don't like how people feel the need to conform so much even in art of all things. you can dislike something and say why you disliked it no matter how many people before you liked it

hot take: people have never understood Cinema Sins as a joke (maybe one that ran too long) and the irrational hatred towards it from some corners of the movie critic environment poured into the Internet and fueled this hate for criticism

I remember years ago talk was going around that we dont have a Roger Ebert anymore. My hot take is the issue is we have too many.
Not to undermine Ebert, one of the best to ever do it, but a big part of his talent was as a populist who could connect with the average joe and make them feel vindicated for liking what they like. Today "everyone's a critic" and it's way too easy to find the shadow of that vindication by just looking for people that agree with everything you think.
