Maudo Sey was a distinguished Gambian musician, singer-songwriter, percussionist and a film actor who played an important role in the development and international recognition of Gambian 🇬🇲 music. He was born on 4 September 1954 in Banjul, The Gambia. He began his musical career in Banjul after spending part of his childhood and youth in Senegal, and became associated with the influential Gambian group Ifang Bondi. He also performed with the Orchestre National du Sénégal in Dakar. His music crossed genres including Afro-pop, ndagga, mbalax, Afro-reggae, soul and Afro-rap, and he sang in Wolof, Mandinka and English. Maudo Sey was also a talented actor. In 2005, he appeared as Burt in Lars von Trier’s internationally released film Manderlay, alongside actors including Danny Glover, Lauren Bacall and Willem Dafoe. While living in Sweden, Maudo Sey continued making music and became the father of children, including internationally acclaimed Swedish-Gambian singer Seinabo Sey, singer Fatima Bramme Sey, and radio and television personality Amie Bramme Sey. His children have continued his artistic legacy in different ways, with Seinabo becoming an internationally recognised recording artist. Maudo Sey died on 17 April 2013 in Stockholm, Sweden, at Karolinska University Hospital. He was subsequently laid to rest in Serrekunda, The Gambia. 🇬🇲 His legacy lives on through his children, particularly Seinabo Sey , who dedicated her 2015 EP (to her father). The Gambia should proudly honour Maudo Sey for helping raise the Gambian flag through music and culture on the international stage. His contribution deserves more than remembrance it deserves permanent recognition. Maudo Sey should be celebrated as a Gambian cultural ambassador who helped raise our flag through his music, talent and international artistic work. His name should remain part of The Gambia’s musical history, and his legacy should inspire future generations of Gambian artists to carry the flag even higher. May your soul continue to rest in peace and may you be rewarded the best place in Jannatul Firrdaus 🙏🏾. Gambia 🇬🇲 let’s pray 🙏🏾 for and celebrate 🙌 together a legend who has raised and still raising the Gambian flag 🇬🇲 through his kids. #gambian_tiktok🇬🇲 #senegalaise_tik_tok🇸🇳 #guineenne224🇬🇳 #views #viral @Seinabo Sey
