both tomatillos and tomato’s are native to the Americas. We been had them. That’s why a word exists for them in our native languages. If a plant didn’t exist here pre-conquest, then we won’t have a name for them in our language. Tomatl = tomato (even the green ones). Xiktomatl = jitomate (these grow on vine)

Yeah tomatoes are from the Americas. Xitomatl was the Nahuatl word for tomato. Miltomatl was the word for the tomatillo.

For some of you who are confuse. Tomate verde/Tomatillo/Tomatl is native and domesticated in Mexico. Tomate rojo/Jitomate/Xitomatl, is native to South America, but it was the Aztecs that domesticated and cultivated Jitomates first. There were many expeditions by the Aztecs to SA. So far there is no evidence that Incas or Quechas cultivated Jitomates/Red Tomato, so in SA it remained as a wild plant until 1600s to 1700s, where Jitomate became a hit in Europe, and Spaniards decided to re-introduce Jitomates as a crop to SA.
