Closest translation for "Sag Bescheid" would be "Give notice" I think, since "Bescheid" comes from government offices or authorities. It probably started out a lot more formal and just got used more and more informally over the years

A Bescheid is the result of an Entscheidung. When you give Bescheid you comunicate it. The word "scheiden" means to separate. It's the same as scindere in Latin. So, de-cision is literally translated as Ent-scheid. It's also in Unterschied or Scheidung. So, maybe it could be translated with keep me updated. Inform me about your decision. The funniest part is that when someone in Germany says, “sag Bescheid wenn du fertig bist " ("Let me know when you’re done,”) it’s totally normal to shout “Bescheid!” instead of simply saying, “I’m done.”

It’s not just „let me known“. It’s more exact if you translate it as „let me know as soon you decided“ because Bescheid in German ist not just Information. It’s the result of a decision. „Etwas wurde Beschieden(Endgültig entschieden)“ that’s why it is also the name of the result from Finanzamt.
