If no one asks me, I know; if I wish to explain it, I do not.” From Presentism, only the now is real, everything else is gone or not yet. For Eternalism, where past, present, and future all exist like pages in a book… the debate never ends. Modern physics complicated things even more. Einstein showed that space and time are fused into spacetime and that your “now” might not match someone else’s. For astronauts, even aging is slower. So what is real? Just this fleeting moment? Or the whole timeline at once? Maybe the strangest thought of all.. It is very likely that the universe is not what it appears to be. The dream theory suggests that our universe could be like a dream that begins in media res—in the middle of the action—with a pre-established set of conditions and apparent history. Just as you might find yourself in a dream already running from something, with a fully-formed but false backstory, our universe could have been "switched on" with all its current properties and historical data intact. In this scenario, all of our scientific measurements—the redshift of galaxies, the temperature fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background, the distribution of elements—would be like the scenery and plot points of the dream. We'd be correctly measuring and extrapolating the "rules" of the dream, but our conclusion about its origins would be fundamentally mistaken. The current estimate of the age of the universe being 13.8 billion years would be the duration of the narrative, not the duration of the underlying reality that is running it.
