President Trump on Monday said there was “no room left” for Mexico and Canada to make a last-minute deal to delay the implementation of steep tariffs that are set go into effect Tuesday. “The tariffs, you know, they’re all set. They go into effect tomorrow,” the president told reporters. The tariffs will impose a 25% fee on all exports coming across the border from Mexico and Canada, the U.S.’s top two trading partners. The taxes will have a big impact on companies that rely on international supply chains and could lead to higher prices for American consumers. Stocks took a hit as the president made the comments, leading to the largest selloff of the year. The S&P 500 fell 1.7%, the Dow dropped 1.5% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite shed 2.6%. President Trump, in addition to trying to encourage more companies to manufacture in the U.S., has framed the tariffs as an effort to get the Canadian and Mexican government to do more to stem the flow fentanyl and migrants into the country. “Vast amounts of fentanyl have poured into our country … and it comes in from Canada and it comes in from Mexico,” he said. The president initially threatened to impose the tariffs on Feb. 4 but paused them for one month after both countries announced steps to address the issue. Mexico pledged to send more troops to the border and Canada appointed a “fentanyl czar.” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CNN earlier in the day that the Mexican and Canadian governments had made improvements with respect to the border but not enough on illicit drugs. “He knows they’ve done a good job on the border. They haven’t done enough on fentanyl,” he said.
