If you’re on government assistance what you’re allowed to buy should be heavily regulated. In order to qualify you should be required to take a class on budgeting and nutrition. Assistance should also come with a time limit. After one year if you haven’t improved your situation your assistance drops by a percentage and subsequently drops every year after with a cap of 5 years at which point the assistance stops.

some areas of the United States have whats referred to as Food Deserts. Many will shop at a Dollar General because thats the closest store for them not an actual grocery store. She appears to be young and we dont know their situation. They may be on the way to doctor appointment and can't store food. Righteous rage doesnt help anyone. EBT should just have a nutritional class that has to be taken with benefits. Many might think most of her choices are fine. They dont know better.

I had a friend who was a single mom on WIC and they could only get specific healthy items and quantities on that plan. That made a lot of sense for kids healthy eating.

Unpopular opinion but a lot of people don’t have the means to get to the grocery store. Maybe dollar general was in walking distance. A lot of lower income neighborhoods purposely don’t have grocery stores They have over priced liquor stores for necessities within walking distance.

Son & his family live in an area where DG is the grocery store. It's that, gas stations or fast food. Nearest "grocery" is Walmart about 45 minutes away.

When I worked at Kmart way back in 1995, we would have so many people come in and buy nothing but junk food with their EBTs. Chips, cokes, snickers, gum, etc. It was crazy because they could have back to grocery aisle and bought healthier food for the same amount of money.

When I got ebt the small amount I got was used to buy protein for the month. Sometimes it meant I had chicken for every meal but I used it for the most expensive part of my grocery bill. I knew that I could get produce and starches cheap to create a balanced meal.

Everything you said is true, what's sad is ppl who don't use EBT do the same also. Helped a friend budget recently, he is spending 160 a week on gas station food and eating out. I think ppl just don't know how to shop. Years ago I got EBT for 6 months, a nutrition class/ shopping was required, great thought I would learn something it was a joke. I was so disappointed. They talked about the food pyramid and gave out a few recipes.
