You are correct it did play a role on the Underground Railroad and so did songs. PLEASE keep on talking about the importance of black peoples contubition to our history. They are foundational to our history of food, art and history.

There’s some important discourse in the book The Story of Art Without Men that talks about the way that fiber arts were some of the only spaces that female artists weren’t excluded from. Highly recommend checking out just that chapter!

I grew up near a Quaker church that had tunnels under it as part of the Underground Railroad & they would do a quilt fair every year to pay homage to the days when they would put the quilt on the line to communicate!

Both of my grandmothers quilted and were both members of quilting groups in their little communities. Those quilting groups still meet today. After my grandmother passed away she left an unfinished quilt, my mother took it to her quilting club and they finished it, I have that quilt today.

There was a sign on the door at my church growing up for the quilt club for the older ladies and it said “ive been stung by a quilting bee” and that just gave it a whole new meaning 🥺💕
