Mystical Manipulation → False Signs & Wonders • Everyday events are framed as supernatural proof: • “You got sick? God is punishing.” • “You got a new job? The pastor prayed for you.” • This keeps members attributing every success or failure to the group. • Lifton’s Thought Reform Theory calls this “mystical manipulation” — creating a sense of divine inevitability that binds people tighter. ⸻ 4. Fear Conditioning → Learned Helplessness • Constant sermons about demons, curses, and hellfire condition members to live in dread. • Like Pavlov’s dogs, fear becomes automatic — just the thought of leaving triggers panic. • This is learned helplessness: members stay because they believe safety only exists inside the cult. ⸻ 5.
