@davejorgenson: There’s only eight years left on the clock. Social Security is projected to reach insolvency in 2033. At that point, the program won’t have enough money to pay out the full benefits promised to retirees. By law, retirees will still get benefits, but they’ll be reduced by 23% across the board. This video is part of my partnership with Free the Facts, a nonpartisan, non-profit organization that empowers young Americans to learn and lead.
it's not a complete picture without mentioning that removing the cap of $176,100 income on ss taxes would fix this problem!

If you liquidated the entire net worth of every billionaire in America, it would fund the federal government for 8 months, and SS exclusively for about 2.5 years. I support a fair tax system, but there isn’t a Scrooge McDuck money vault out there that can fund all of your favorite programs, spending also has to be curbed.

And if there was no max cap on FICA taxes we could solve the insolvency instead of capping at 160k of earnings

people on here are clueless. saying that "we need to tax the rich more", or " raise the tax cap will solve the problem". They fail to realize that no matter how much money you put into the system, the goverment will just keep stealing from that account. Had the government kept its greedy paws out of SS, there would have been plenty of money.

This was a pyramid scheme waiting to collapse. It needs new investors to constantly pay the old ones infinitely. The problem is there is never an infinite amount of anything.

Social Security is only at risk because politicians refuse to fix the problem. The idea of needing more people paying in than collecting was always going to be unsustainable. You cannot have infinite growth.
Just take in more taxes and pay the full benefits. Stop letting companies get rid of pensions. Stop shifting all retirement plans to 401Ks tied to the stock market.
