As far as I can tell, the leading theory is that this behaviour is caused by our restrictive alcohol regulations. We buy too much alcohol at a time because we don't want to run out when the sale is closed off, and then we drink all of it to feel like we get value from all the money we paid to buy it in the first place, and eventually it just turned into the norm as part of our drinking culture. Just a theory I heard somewhere, but makes a lot of sense to me.
