I think voice actors make the book. A book I enjoyed was recently released in audio and I decided not to purchase because the author narrated it and though is voice is ok, I can tell it isn’t “acted” by a professional, if that makes sense. It’s just being read enthusiastically. But I commend you for refusing the Ai route.

The cost plus the time is where it will likely be more advantageous to hire a narrator. It takes a professional narrator 3-5 hours to produce 1 finished hour, as a new narrator I took 8-10. And if your editing yourself (not recommended) will take forever, and hurting it is pricey (but better). There are options such had royalty shares, kickstarter, pay as you go options with some narrators. Happy to answer questions, I’m a full time audiobook narrator.

I’m actually working on doing my first audio book read for my friends book that came out. And it’s not the reading it and recording that’s the problem.. it’s the editing…. You could read one chapter in 20min and then spend 2hrs editing that 1 chapter.

Audible uses ACX to find narration talent. There is an option for Royalty Share, which means no up front cost to have them narrated, you just share your royalties from sales once the audiobook is live.

First, ACX royalty share is an option. You’re going to be exclusive for 7 years. Some narrators will take payments as well. BUTTTTT if you’ve got the skills Audacity is free and you can get a decent mic for $300 or less ❤️

You don’t need a fancy booth. A walk in closet or a booth-box for your mike will help (a cloth cube for a cubby lined with some sound proofing foam). Or a blanket over your head 😆

I want to get into narration so bad 😭 I would love to read you a snippet of one of your books so you can hear it read by an actual human that isn’t yourself if you want! I’m not a professional. I read my books aloud to myself and am an avid audiobook listener… (Thank you for refusing to do AI)

Use Audacity software, which is free. I created a sound booth out of a giant box and acoustical tiles off Amazon. The only thing you need to be decent quality is a microphone with a screen. You might be able to borrow one.

Honestly, you really need a voice actors to do a good audiobook. I've DNFed books due to subpar narration and never went back. I think it's better to invest in the physical/digital book and marketing and fo audio with a VS later if the money comes in.
