Lack of preparation, failure to respond. All of that. The individual stories of struggle and suffering. My 18 year old son was on a job in New Orleans on the Friday before and my spidey senses said get the heck out now. Get. Out. He left on Saturday. People got out. I worked for an insurance company and we were steady writing checks for people who were displaced by the storm but the people who got out were people who look like me and who had reliable transportation and money to fund a trip. Twenty years later it’s still wrong.

I lived through it, and it was horrible. I remember being so angry and frustrated at how long it took for help to reach these people. I will never understand that. The only thing it left me thinking was, did they want these people to lose their lives? They’ve already lost everything. The only thing they had left was their life. I was beyond pissed
