How Rare Are White Cats? Yes — it’s true! Only about 5% of the overall domestic cat population is solid white. That’s because “white” in cats isn’t a color, it’s a masking gene (the “dominant white” gene, W). It basically overrides whatever tabby, black, or calico pattern the cat would have had underneath. Why You Don’t See Them Often Most cats in the wild carry survival-friendly coats (tabby, brown, mixed). White fur sticks out like a neon sign in nature, so it doesn’t pass down as easily in feral colonies. Breeds specifically bred for white (Persians, Turkish Angoras, Khao Manee) are more likely to produce them — but random strays? Of those rare white cats, 17–22% with blue eyes are deaf (one or both ears). If they have one blue eye and one gold eye, usually the blue-eyed side is the deaf one. Non-blue-eyed whites usually hear just fine. So if you’ve got 1 out of 50 — that’s exactly what the math says should happen. You’ve basically got the unicorn of your colony. 🦄🐈⬛✨ #cats #whitecats #teamwork #catsoftiktok #textfeature
