Incoming, oncoming, upcoming, coming up… do you know the difference in meaning between these four words and phrases? Watch the whole video to learn the difference, keep reading for more example sentences with each one, and don’t forget to write your own examples with them in the comments, since this is the best way to learn new vocabulary and make it stick in your brain! 😊 Take note of the meanings of the four words/phrases I give you in today’s video: 🔹incoming = in the process of coming into a place or arriving at a place, or about to start something new (like a job); we typically use this word before a noun, and it’s most commonly used with nouns like students, presidents, calls, emails, etc.: When I got to the airport, I looked at the screen displaying the incoming flights and saw that my friend’s flight was delayed. 🔹oncoming = getting closer to a person or thing; while we use “incoming”to say that something’s arriving at a PLACE, we use “oncoming”to say that something’s getting closer to a PERSON or THING, and just like “incoming,” we typically put it before nouns. Some examples of nouns we typically use it with include cars (or other vehicles like trains and bikes), traffic, storms, waves, etc.: If you keep your head down, you could easily walk into oncoming traffic and get hit. 🔹upcoming = happening soon; just like the last two adjectives, we almost always put this one before nouns (which means that we typically say “the upcoming event” instead of “the event is upcoming”): On Saturday, I like to rest and do no work to recharge my batteries for the upcoming week. 🔹coming up = if something is coming up, this also means that it’s happening soon, and this meaning of “come up” is VERY common in spoken English: My mom’s birthday is coming up, so I have to start thinking about what I’m going to get her. Also, we use the phrasal verb “come up to” to say that someone is walking towards us and stopping in front of us, usually to say something to us or do something: While I was waiting to cross the street, a homeless man came up to me and asked for money. . . . . . #esl #learnenglish #speakenglish #advancedenglish
