I know some of you saw me at Carabana this weekend without my hijab. I also know some of you recorded me, whispered about me, or even yelled things like “kafir” and “astaghfirullah” at me. That was deeply hurtful. Publicly shaming someone like that is not okay—it doesn’t make you more righteous, it only pushes people further away. The truth is, I’ve been struggling. I lost two children back to back, and in my grief I slipped into old habits. I picked up smoking again, and even had a couple drinks. Because of that, I didn’t feel worthy to wear my hijab. That doesn’t mean I’ll stay on this path—I’ve already been to AA meetings and I’m trying to heal. But please remember: nobody but Allah has the right to judge. My struggle is between me and my Creator. To be yelled at and targeted in public like that has left me shaken—I honestly haven’t even left my house since. At the same time, Carabana is a part of my culture, and I finally got the chance to go here in Kitchener. It was much more family-friendly than Toronto, and honestly, I felt like I could have brought my kids. Maybe next year I will. To those who showed kindness—thank you. And to those struggling in silence—you are not alone.
