I dont think this is a downfall, i think it was just a changing of the time that he couldn't be a part of and was left behind. His music was great for what it was and the era its from but not meant for what came after. Plus it's not like he was (at this time at least) involved in some controversies or desperately trying to grasp at fame to lead to a downfall. He just accepted what the scene had become and bowed out and not dragging it out in hopes of a comeback.

His music was just good for the time. There's so many artists from that time who fell off and it's not that their music was bad, music just changed. Look at someone like Katy Perry. She still releases music, but it's not as good as it used to be.
