Mental Health Starts at Home, Says Councillor Ester Nomvula - Community Must Play Its Role #cchrafrica #MentalWellness #MentalHealth #InformedConsent #Community #Education #rights CCHR Launches For the First Time in Pretoria - Tshwane, Attridgeville 14 July 2026 The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) officially launched for the first time in Pretoria, Tshwane, in Attridgeville on 14 July 2026. Communities from Baroui, Attridgeville, Phelindaba, Lotus Gardens and surrounding areas came in their numbers to witness and support the historic launch. Speaking at the launch, Councillor Ester Nomvula emphasized that mental health starts at home and is not the responsibility of the Government alone, but that the community must play its role. She called on families, schools, churches, and local organizations to work together with government and stakeholders like CCHR to build healthy and resilient communities. Addressing attendees, CCHR Public Relations Officer, Madimetsa Nkoana, emphasized a holistic approach to mental wellness. He highlighted the importance of diet, and auditing the words we say to one another, as key factors in building mental strength and unity within homes and communities. Nkoana further encouraged community members to start programs that keep communities active and healthy. He mentioned the establishment of sports programs, support groups, and a fitness club for the elderly as essential pillars for building healthy communities. He concluded by calling on all stakeholders to support community-led initiatives that promote dignity, health, and human rights. The launch marks the beginning of CCHR’s long-term commitment to working with the communities of Tshwane to promote awareness and education on mental health, human rights, and community wellbeing.
