He left his kayak overturned in the middle of the lake and then took off to Uzbekistan to be with a woman he had met online. He planted evidence to make his death appear real, purchased a life jacket and an e-bike, obtained a second passport, cleared his laptop and web history, set up financial accounts to move funds abroad, and even reversed his vasectomy. Borgwardt pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 89 days in jail—the same number of days he remained “missing” while authorities believed he had drowned. He has paid $30,000 in restitution to cover investigative costs incurred by the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. He was also given Huber Privileges, meaning he can leave jail to go to work. #truecrime
