I think you might not grab a joke here and there? But I’m halfway through and don’t think you’ll have a problem. Paradise lost, the Aeneid, and the wastelands are all mentioned, but you don’t need to read them to read this. But it’s pretty great that her name is Alice 🐇

Kuang’s Babel and Katabasis bring back the old tradition of “literature” like Canadian author Robertson Davies. I think that’s why I love her writing. It’s purposely elitist and “ivory tower” academic; if you even hint at understanding these books, I know your politics, your aesthetics, and your breadth and depth of understanding in history, humanities, and the Arts™️. It’s a way to identify ourselves against rightwing governments/people trying to control education. (Wow. I’ve been in school for waaaay too long.)

This was less textbook than babel, more philosophical and mathematical concepts are brought up, but the required reading idea is totally not needed, if you have any interest from a quote or two, google is free 🤷‍♀️

you’ll be fine! i think people started talking about ways to like enhance the read and that got mixed into this “required reading” idea. i went in blind snd enjoyed it 100%

I loved Babel and didn't find it too academic at all. I found Katabasis incredibly boring - it wasn't over my head, I just found it dull. It's neither character nor plot driven tbh.

This is why I don’t read reviews anymore until I’m done reading. After, I use my reviews to see if I felt the same things that other did.

I just finished reading, the world building is VERY accessible. People were exaggerating about the prior readings. It’s MUCH less heavy than Babel, and much more plot driven. Hope this helps! 🥳

Get it from the library. Then if you don’t like the book it’s not a loss.

It’s an easier read than Three Body Problem. Character driven. I believe it may be her best book. 📕

Just borrow it from your library. They also have Libby/hoopla for digital/audiobook versions. To save money I just borrow the book and if I love it I buy it

I feel like people really exaggerated on how “academic” the book is. Are there a lot of math, philosophy, and literary references? Yes. But it reads like a normal story. If anything, Babel was more “academic”

I read it in its entirety in 2 sittings. I could not put it down. Keep in mind I am NOT an academic. I only have a high school diploma lol

i am loving Katabasis so much and i honestly think you can enjoy it without understanding the references because it is truly, HEAVILY character-driven, imo.

I hadn't read any of her previous books, but saw alot of people predicting they may not like/enjoy what you're mentioning here. so I have it borrowed through the library instead and then after a bit if I know I'll love it I'll go buy it

No no no don’t listen to the noise. Put on some noise canceling headphones, put on a Spotify dark academia classical music playlist, and IMMERSE. See you on the flip side

The Three-Body Problem trilogy is one of my all-time favorite scifi series and I loved Babel. So, I'm feeling right at home with this book 😌

Its very readable. The book makes several literary allusions but you might get them if you paid attention in high school English or have consumed media that makes the same allusions.

Epilogue :
I read the Three Body Problem too and it was so hard for me to go on because I'm no science or physics guy, but I still pushed thru and loved it. You'll be fine with R.F. Kuang. Astrophysics and Nanomaterial stuff is harder to grasp than dark academia magic something. 🤭
