@sorry.goose: most autistic friends that i’ve met struggle with cognitive empathy but have high emotional empathy so im curious, am i the only one who struggles in the opposite way? 💝 #autism #autisticadult #neurodivergent #empathy
…this is how I found out that I don’t feel emotional empathy

For me it depends on the situation. For example if someone died and I was never closed to them I know logically I should feel sad but I don’t because I don’t know them but I understand why others are sad

My issue isn’t lack of empathy but hyper empathy.

I have very, very high cognitive empathy and minimal emotional empathy. For the longest time I thought I also have strong emotional empathy because I would get upset whenever someone talking to me was upset, right? Turns out I get upset because I feel like I should comfort the other person and I PANIC.

I often struggle to feel happy for someone… Overall it can be harder to feel empathy when it’s something I can’t relate to or for example it wasn’t something obviously horrible. But at times I feel so much empathy that it ruins my day, it’s very complicated 😭

I.....I am realizing that I might have high cognitive empathy and low emotional empathy.....like I have a hard time reacting to stuff, like I fully understand what they are feeling and why but I'm like...devoid of emotion in those moments which often forces me to over compensate. But I do feel a lot of emotional empathy when like...reading fiction. Where I almost feel what the characters are feeling in a kind of extreme way.

Oh my gosh you just helped me understand myself lol. I didn’t understand when people thought I was cold when I said I did not care about someone losing their job or getting promoted, etc. I’d just act how I’d see others because… in the nicest way it is non of my buisness so why would I care

can emotional empathy vary depending on the emotion? like when someone else is happy I'm happy to see them happy, but when someone is sad, I wont feel sad, but it really depends on the reason their sad?? idk tbh, tysm for this info tho <3

i‘m german and our word for compassion is „mitgefühl“ literally meaning you feel (gefühl = feeling) with (=mit) the person. well the day of my autism assessment at the ripe age of 30 i learnt that you really are supposed to do feel „with“ the person when you are showing compassion and empathy. i always thought you would just say that you are sorry for them or feel with them (hard to explain because of the differences in wording but i hope you get what i mean) because that is what you do but actually feel nothing. i thought that‘s just what you do. turns out you are actually supposed to FEEL sadness or whatever the other person is feeling???? big oof
