I was percussionist. I had piano as a younger kid. We had to start on “bells” in fifth grade if we wanted to play drums. It was helpful.

2 years piano experience in 5th grade is an indication of privilege. It would be wonderful if public schools made the availability of meaningful music instruction available for everyone and not just those whose parents can afford to participate, but that is not the reality in most public schools.

2 years before 5th grade? That seems like a lot to expect.

This is such a strange requirement unless the school is providing piano lessons. It makes more sense to me to start the littles on drum pads and tambours but I grew up with the drum as a foundational instrument.

no Fifth grade is the start of most ban programs. So why does Percussion need 2 years experience more than everyone else?

Makes sense as a piano is a percussion instrument

If you have after school care, consider offering a piano class there. Once you have a piano lab set up, it’s not that expensive to hire a teacher and divide the cost between the parents. I teach a couple of group classes at a parks and rec after school program, and a lot of the kids who make the all west band and orchestra in middle school started with piano-at $5 a lesson.

Interesting! I currently have a higher boy-to-girl ratio for private piano!

I agree that this is a wonderful idea but few students have this kind of privilege sadly. I require students to become competent on a band instrument first and then they can test to move to percussion

Cool idea… for people with resources. Unless the school I was teaching it, I didn’t have it. I was in percussion for 6 years lol. Double read girly, who couldn’t do marching band because of double reed.

been like that in our district for 20+ years. you either have to have a few years of piano or pass a rhythm and counting test (which is completely passable if you paid attention in 4th grade music, but not many actually do).

My kiddo is a music major in college and is a percussionist. He is required to take four semesters of piano/keyboard at his university and pass a keyboarding proficiency test. But for children who are not collegiate-level music majors, requiring piano reeks of privilege.

this is wild to me. I don't think I could find 5 kids in my entire building tho play piano.

call me crazy....I just let kids play whatever they want. I would never deny a kid a chance to play something they would actually want to practice. Many parents in our community can't afford private lessons, but of course, playing piano is going to be beneficial to every musician. I encourage it, but could never require it.

My 10 year violin student added viola and is now trying to decide between piano and cello. Lessons and orchestra fees are the same as our food budget at this point 😂😭 lol

As a percussionist I agree. Piano experience helps a lot because as a percussionist you have to read both treble and bass clefs. Add that with an accelerated rhythm introduction in percussion versus the wind instruments. Lastly mallet percussion instruments are set up like a piano. There is a reason many districts don’t offer percussion in beginning band. It makes percussion easier to transition to versus day one being dropped into the fire

i just implemented a similar concept this year and so far so good. i finally don’t have 1/4 of my bands on percussion. loving it. also low brass is super popular too! so happy!

Piano is such a good basis, I think it’s part of why theory wasn’t as bad for me personally. BUT I think 2 years of piano before percussion (so that means minimum age 6-8 for a 4th grade band start, ages 9-10) is a pretty unreasonable unless it’s a very affluent school district 😅 plus a lot of kids don’t even know they wanna do band until the year before or year of band starting. And a lot of parents of band kids aren’t very musically inclined themselves, so they wouldn’t have thought to seek that out for their 1-2nd grader

Every musician should play piano. I played clarinet and never played piano. People who played piano had a big advantage.

My son’s school had a similar requirement. He didn’t want to take piano lessons, but it definitely helped him in the long run.

Or it discourages people who didn't to not want to play the instrument they want and therefore less likely continue or play in the first place.

As a trombonist, having some piano under my belt had me already knew how to read bass clef. Next I just had to figure out that dang slide 😂😂

Public or private school? I do not like it when public schools gatekeep learning experiences behind private and expensive tutoring.

While I agree this is a wonderful idea, public school is the only access some children have to music. Why should they be denied playing the instrument they WANT to play because they were less fortunate?
