1. The lakes are safe! However, there are places that have rip tides in Lake Michigan and unfortunately that’s why it’s the most deadly in the US.

The Great Lakes are SO dangerous. Especially Lake Michigan and Superior. The water is dangerous not the animals in there. It can change in a blink of an eye. I grew up in a tourist town on the lake, someone dies every summer. Also, The lighthouses will also suck you under and your body can’t be recovered if you swim too close to it.

Yes, of course lakes are safer than oceans due to the no sharks and it’s better to swim a lake in an ocean because there’s no salt. But Lake Michigan does have rip currents. That can be very dangerous.

Completely safe to swim in the lakes, no dangerous animals lol. Just watch out for riptides and don’t get in when there’s a red flag which indicates dangerous water conditions/currents/waves. Many people that bash MI have not really experienced what it has to offer or seen its beauty.

you know that song riptide? Riptides are real google it. They are most common on Lake Michigan, but there are absolutely no aquatic animals that are dangerous. The only thing that is dangerous about the lakes are the riptides.

I’m from Michigan and live here presently- don’t listen to those people- they don’t know what they’re talking about. Basically if it’s a beach and people are there you’re fine. Undertoes do happen but they are obvious

Oh for heaven sakes. I’ve lived in Michigan my whole life, never have I ever seen heard any such thing. The lakes are fine, there are no creatures that will harm you. Sorry people are so critical but you were just fine. I hope you come back. ❤️

The Undertoe, it’s an undercurrent that can yank out way way out deep.. but it’s not a big deal if it’s super calm out, basically swim at your own risk if it’s super choppy.

it's safe to swim in the lakes! theyre big enough that they dont grow dangerous algae, and there are some currents that can sneak up on you. anti Michigan stuff is likely due to sports.

I think Michigan getting a bad reputation is from our biggest city being know as dangerous and nobody looks beyond that. Detroit is doing much better these days and the rest of the state is beautiful.

Lake Michigan has rip tides which will pull you farther and farther from shore. The way to get out is to swim parallel to shore until you get out of it. They will post warnings at the beaches where these occur.

I think most people are referring to the fact that since it’s still considered a lake, it seems safer than it might be, and people overlook that there are ripcurrents

Lake Michigan is not safe due to the Rip currents. There are around 12 deaths per year due to rip currents! It is dangerous!

The Great Lakes get rough and have the scary rip currents. The inland lakes still get choppy but not riptides

The lakes are safe, but you have to make sure you’re going in on a calmer day. The currents and riptides can be strong and people do get pulled in. However, most public beaches will have a notice if it’s particularly strong.

1. the great lakes are perfectly safe to swim in but you do need to be aware of rip currents. Yes they are lakes but they are big enough to possess the energy of an ocean. 2. Michigan "hates" Ohio. its the worst state/team 😂

The Michigan vs Ohio rivalry dates back to the Toledo War of 1835 - 1836. Because of a difference of method in surveying the border, both states laid claim to Toledo and almost went to a shooting war over it. Federal mediation led to Ohio keeping Toledo and Michigan gaining statehood with the Upper Peninsula (aka UP).
