unfortunately, there is no such thing as ethical ai. roleplaying with ai is not good, because its damaging to mental health (there is a LOT of studies about it), because it divides person from the community and socialisation, as ai is incapable of having emotions, only modelling them. on the other hand, there is also the problem with originality and authenticity of ai texts, because nope, its not //them// writing the story, its them writing parts of the story, whilst ai merges sentences from existing novels, texts and everything else. as much as I do actually want for ai to become ethical and evolve, at this point, countless studies show that ai is damaging to people's mental health, social skills and creativity. they don't get authentic and social content, they get merged essence of content pieces from all across the Internet, which is both, not valid and stolen.

That’s a really interesting idea, and I appreciate that in a really myopic way it could be a great use of LLMs. Myopic not only bc of the headline environmental and creative theft issues but also bc it’s so much easier to paper over the fact that one is struggling to play in a satisfying way or struggling with their creativity than to reckon with them. There are a million tiny things like that, and sometimes the right amount of friction between a problem and its apparent solution is beneficial. Thanks for sharing these thoughts bc they give me more to think about! 💖

This is really interesting, and it makes me sad that I feel like i can’t engage with the idea of it as play the way I would like. But honestly, until they make AI less of an environmental burden, I don’t think there can be any ethical use of it at all. Humans get so excited about what we can do with a technology that we ignore the fires that technology sets, fires that will disproportionately affect poor and marginalized communities. It makes me sad that so many people can and will ignore the harm it does, regardless of the quality of what it can create.
