Dental hygienists, and really all dental professionals, spend hours every day in awkward postures: reaching, twisting, bending, and holding still while working on patients. Over time, that takes a toll. Many of us suffer from chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain, and some even develop long-term injuries that cut careers short. A big part of the problem comes from how operatories are set up. When the computer, keyboard, or equipment are placed too high or too far away, we end up forcing our bodies into positions like this just to get the job done. Yes, I could’ve moved the keyboard in this moment, but this is just one example of the many operatories that aren’t designed with ergonomics in mind. And if the setup isn’t right, the strain adds up , day after day, year after year. Ergonomics isn’t just about comfort.
