You can have black skin and not be African. When Marco Polo was in the Pandyan Kingdom in southern India, he describes the people there as having black skin. The Russian merchant Afanasy Nikitin who lived during the 15th century, traveled to India and he describes the people in southern India as having black skin.

It’s a clear double standard when people claim to be “decolonizing” while still using the label Asian as a way to separate themselves from darker-skinned groups who identify as Black. This distinction only seems to matter when Black people—or the original people—move to unite. At that point, others try to control the narrative, deciding who is or isn’t considered Black, despite not even being dark-skinned themselves, particularly in the case of South Indians.
