I think it was the demogorgan even tho the Vecna theory makes sense. My opinion on it is that when Eleven contacted the demogorgan that gave it power to open gates as they confirmed in the show. If the demogorgan was is from Dimension X and that’s where the mind flayer resides along with Vecna and other monster. We know it’s a hive mind so is it a reach to say maybe Vecna was able to add some manipulation of his own to get the demogorgan to open the door? Because from what we know, the demogorgan was the only thing in the upside down in season 1. Vecna couldnt open his own gates until the spider monster bit El in season 3, exposing him to her power. If it was Vecna that took Will season 1 he would’ve been able to open the four gates already cause that means he would’ve physically been in Hawkins and we know from season 4 he said he couldn’t get where he needed to go until he sought her power.

I think that vecna was “there”, I think the flickering light at mikes house meant that vecna was listening to them/following Will, and that he sent the demogorgon after Will, so he wasn’t there physically, but he was there mentally, and the demogorgon was like a representative, acting out his plan

Yeah I still can’t get over the continuity error of Vecna being controlled by the Mind Flayer. Yes the play shows he’s being controlled, yet in the show he(Henry) states that he found something to transform himself, a way to become the predator he was meant to be, he then warps the dog into the shape of the mind Flayer. He literally drew it when he was a kid and molded the fog into that form.

I agreed with you that it wasn’t Vecna but I have a theory is yes and no and it is a bit of a long shot but hear me out in season 4 Vecna tells Eleven he only need someone to opened the door and so when Eleven opened the gate back in season 1 there a good chance that Vecna knew and I am guessing it took time for the gate to opened sand I believe the opening of the gate and Will going missing happened at the same time so when the gate was opened enough Vecna got close to the gate and use his illusion power to make a fake demogorgon that chase Will and when Will was in his shed Vecna use his full power to take Will to the upside down. Long shot I know thoughts?
