President Trump said Thursday he was “very disappointed” in Elon Musk for his all-out assault on the “one big, beautiful” reconciliation bill. “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” the president told reporters during an Oval Office meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Mr. Musk, who spent nearly $300 million to boost President Trump’s candidacy before leading DOGE, turned against the president’s signature piece of legislation this week, calling it a “disgusting abomination.” His three-day screed against the House-passed measure came just days after he officially left the administration as a special government employee, which was marked with a lengthy Oval Office sendoff. President Trump said he believed Mr. Musk turned against the bill because he was upset it eliminates tax credits for electric vehicles — and because the president nixed his preferred pick to run NASA. “I’m very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anybody sitting here. Better than you people. He knew everything about it. He had no problem with it,” the president said. “All of a sudden he had a problem. And he only developed the problem when he found out that we’re going to have to cut the EV mandate, because that’s billions and billions of dollars.” Mr. Musk shot back on his social media platform, almost in real time, rejecting the president’s characterization. “False, this bill was never shown to me even once and was passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!” he said.
