I remember my first year in IT in 2021, did that mistake while updating a soft on a VM at midnight. As soon as I pressed shutdown (like I would do with my PC), I felt the chills down my spine. but remembered I had ILo so it was OK. But what I didn't know was that Windows Server update would cause a blue screen at boot. (I don't remember what KB but it was impacting all of our systems that had auto Windows Update activated). Had to find a discord server with IT guys still connected (thanks guys you saved my life). We stayed up 'till 3AM to recover the backup as I never did that at that time. Glad I experienced this so now I'm ready for everything or so I think ? 😅

When you hit shutdown on a Windows server, it should ask you for a reason with a text box before it actually does it. That prevents this and it has for over 20 years…Get off my lawn.

did that to our exchange server at 8am Monday on my first job.. it was the 3rd largest financial consultancy in the world at the time and I belive the estimated cost was about £200,000 an hour lost and it was down for several hours... we removed the shutdown option for remote sessions after that and somehow I kept my job XD

I did this recently, remembered I can push GPO's so I disabled the shutdown/reboot buttons from start 🤣

This is one reason why I’m glad 99% of our servers are virtual not physical, don’t have to drive in just to turn it on, and they are back online within seconds not minutes

... It probably needed the reset. Just hope you did not do it at peak hours... Sidenote... How do I blackmail my IT into finally providing us decent laptops? Releasing our boomer hasn't worked. Filing the same ticket every day for 1000 days somehow doesn't feel like it would work. I really should, IT gave me a defective laptop... Blackmail IT, You fix my private laptop, we ignore our problem...
