Definitely knit up a couple swatches if you have leftover yarn to practice dying with!!! And then you can see how well different dyes take to the fiber

Dharma trading has a bunch of guides on how to dye different fibers and different techniques as well as some of the best prices on dye. If that is wool and you want it solid black you need to use acid dye and a vat dying technique.

Dyeing is not that hard, especially overdyeing. It’s also red, so it’s a good base for red or brown. Just make sure you have an acid, it’s well mixed, and keep at like a simmer. I use powder dye cause more for the buck, but believe any dye will work. The water clears up when the dye is taken, or mostly, and amusing to see

I haven’t done this myself but I really looked into it once. Because its hand knit rit is probably not going to do it well enough. The coverage just won’t be even and it has to be really really hot to do rit well so it might just end up felted.

I used a rit dye on a 100% wool Sophie hood. It was a mustard yellow and I dyed it a dark teal color! As long as you’re gentle it’ll be totally fine. (I will say there was still some yellow that shows through if you look close.)

I fully back you dyeing it, you deserve to enjoy your work!! obviously the zipper won't dye and looks cool toned, so either a deep black or cool toned brown would look excellent, however that's probably gonna be hard to achieve given the red, but life is short, do some experiments!! if you can't get the colour you want you can redye and try again

Just make sure the bucket you use is big enough to actually move the fabric around. Otherwise it could get blotchy

That jacket is literal perfection and I’m so jealous but I know I don’t have the patience to make it myself. I think dying it a more crimson red would be a very flattering color on you and probably not too technically difficult since its still a close color?

Isn’t black the hardest color to dye? 🫣

I’ve dyed wool using pigments from knit picks. It wasn’t knit up yarn but it came out nicely.they do have guides also to help you figure out how to do it. https://www.knitpicks.com/jet-black/p/80337
