@tomtheweatherwizard: 20 YEARS AGO TODAY: In August 2005, the National Weather Service issued one of the most dire warnings in U.S. history ahead of Hurricane Katrina. The bulletin described a storm of unprecedented strength, rivaling even 1969’s Hurricane Camille. It warned that most of the New Orleans area would be “uninhabitable for weeks… perhaps longer.” Well-built homes would face roof and wall failure. Industrial buildings would collapse. High-rise towers would sway, and windows would blow out. Airborne debris could include household appliances, SUVs, and light trucks. Power and water would be out for weeks, trees would snap, crops destroyed, and livestock and people exposed to the winds faced certain death if struck. The message ended with chilling urgency: “Once tropical storm and hurricane force winds onset… do not venture outside!” This forecast was tragically accurate. Katrina remains one of the most devastating hurricanes in American history. 🌊 ⸻ #HurricaneKatrina #ExtremeWeather #WeatherHistory #StormWarning #WeatherTok
