I feel like it is worth asking the couple getting married what their definition is, because otherwise there are indeed a million ways to interpret it. The anti-red dress rule sounds like something from the last century though 😅

dress codes change with culture. what would be ok to wear to a black tie wedding today is not the same as a black tie wedding in 1890 (extreme example) and ppl who say otherwise are being deliberately obtuse. today's black tie is more flexible than the app would have you believe. however if the couple is conforming to the strictest definition of a black tie event, it is polite to adhere to the strictest definition of black tie dress

I mean I think in general I don’t trust any store’s categorization of dress codes (think business/office clothes at revolve), but I’ve generally found most people to follow dress codes at black tie events! At the weddings I’ve been to, the people that deviated from the black tie dress code were usually the exception

Black tie optional is so that people feel comfortable putting their black tie stuff on, without obligating others to have to invest too much, but they still know it’s going to be dressy.

Market matters. In New York (and DC and like cities) black tie means black tie especially if the couple is wealthy. In California, Florida, Texas etc black tie usually translates to formal. Just like how business attire in those settings is a looser interpretation.

it very much matters the crowd. a black tie wedding for a middle class family will hit totally different than a black tie wedding full of the very affluent folks.

In my opinion, the thing that stands out glaringly as not black tie is that the material is far too thin and flimsy. I think that’s way more important than length. It doesn’t look nice enough, looks very casual.

What is with the surge of people wanting black tie weddings? I may be wrong, but it feels like people just want their guests to look social media worthy and chasing the aesthetic of what they see from influencers online, instead of actually taking their guests into account
