@allyshaps: What am I missing here? Sharing my previous salaries in nyc because that seems standard to me or are salaries much higher now? Which would be amazing and they should be but it seems like companies are laying off employees left and right #thecuttingroomfloor

It’s not a living wage for people who aren’t supported by their mom

You were happy to have your salary because you came from extreme wealth, and you didn’t have to worry about your bills or paying back your student loans

with all due respect, you had the benefit of being able to depend on your family wealth to be able to happily take these jobs and not worry about how to feed yourself. this is not the standard rate because it doesn't match or exceed the cost of living. without wealthy parents, this job is then out of reach for other qualified candidates.

Same here…was also a media buyer in 2015/2016. But that was 10 years ago, living costs have gone up and a starting salary below $70 is unliveable in NYC

it was THEN, it isn’t NOW…the cost of living has gone through the roof along with the cost of necessities like groceries so $55k a year doesn’t go nearly as far as it did even just 5-6 years ago

I make 50k as a seventh year assistant teacher. I’m barely getting by. Salaries haven’t raised enough to help people survive in this economy. This isn’t the take you want it to be.

I’m not sure when you graduated but things cost way more now than they did back then I’m sure. The cost of living, food prices, gas etc. So many people rely on money just to survive.

Doesn’t mean it’s right. These billion dollar organisations need to pay their staff a living wage.

If you able to work a job that didn't pay you a living wage, who paid your bills?

You say it’s not a liveable wage twice. Doesn’t that answer your question?

An unliveable wage means just that. You can’t live off of that. If the average person were to take these jobs they would need to either live on the street, couch surf or have parents to rely on. Apparently these jobs are only for wealthy offspring or people with a lot friends. And furthermore, just because it is industry standard, it doesn't make it right.

This is all perspective. $55,000 to you is different than $55,000 to someone else that has to support themselves and has student loans. Not disparaging how you were raised, but your baseline for the real world is much different than every single other person that didn’t come from your scenario. And that’s the whole basis of it all honestly.

Yes my first job i made $43k, the same as the law clerks I knew who had just graduated law school. And i paid $1500/month in rent with a roommate and lived cheaply other than that. That was what everyone did. Was it hard? Yes. Did my family pay my rent? No, we all just figured it out.

Ally, marketing & media jobs are historically so restrictive in salaries— on the other hand, my daughter graduated w a math degree & MS in real estate, and is making 6 figures—right out of college. Finance is where the $$$ is.

35k doesn’t work anymore because rent is so high everywhere. South Florida you would be homeless or living in subsidized housing. Starting salary at 50k is super reasonable because there’s no experience yet but once you have 2-3 years experience in your industry you should be at 70+ I think it depends on what industry you studied in school. Even lawyers start at 40k in some instances. I think work experience in your industry trumps any advanced degree as far as salary’s are concerned

Ooof. It’s giving, “stop being poor.” Maybe we should raise our standards—the corps can afford it.
