@msticol: So from this experience I now need to change my map AGAIN bc it was too empty. If there are easier ways please tell me bc I need a way to visualize so I can make it MAKE SENSE . . . #worldbuilding #art #painting #fyp #passionproject
WHERE, did you get the sphere 😌. I've been looking for one and can't find any good ones

what if you just had a blue globe and then you cut out pieces of paper for your land masses and tape them to the globe. that way if they aren't right you can take them off easily and try again

Remember that for the technology of the time they may not have the whole thing mapped.

If you have procreate, you can import 3d objects and paint on them 👍

So, I was inspired by someone to use one of these and a dry erase marker to plot out my globes. Once you like it, permanent marker. I have my homebrew dnd world on a ponk one XD

Get a blank white or clear beach ball and some dry erase markers and you can edit your globe until you like it, I am on the same grind as you lmao

Why don't you use the rice technique? You basically take a sheet of bond paper (or any paper) add rice or any other grain, and use it to make the shapes of the continents and islands. When you're happy with the position, you trace the outlines. The great thing is that you have the freedom to experiment with shapes and sizes.

Well, if you started initially by designing the map flat it wouldn't really work. Orb maps and flat maps don't translate 1 to 1. You gotta choose some stuff that's gonna look shrunk or enlarged.

awhile back I found a website that let you put an image onto a 3D globe and I used that to work out the landmasses of my map but last time I tried using the site it wouldn't load 😔

if you have an art program, i recommend mapping in equirectangular projection cuz that can be easily put onto a sphere, but as far as making the landmarks i'd say either azimuthal equidistant or gott-goldberg-vanderbei is better cuz they preserve scale better (minimal distortion). any program that can take an equirectangular map and map it to polar coordinates should do the trick

I took my friend’s globe and stand so that I could make a proper map for my dnd world because MY WORLD IS NOT FLAT even if that would be much easier for map making

A globe map for D&D sounds like a great idea! Especially since I’m going to DM for the first time soon!

Google “labeled world globe pepacura” then you can cut the peices out after sizing them and it should all line up

Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Maker has a built in globe setting. It’s a skooch wonky, but it’s pretty useful if you don’t do too much at the edges.
