*repost I'll be honest- I'm really lucky that breastfeeding has worked so well for us, and even more so that nursing in a carrier has! It's allowed me to keep my babies happy so much longer than I otherwise could. It's been a source of food, but also comfort. I struggled so much with my first when I started using a soft structured carrier for the first time. I had a friend with a baby 4 months older who nursed in hers with ease and I just assumed it was because she had a large chest and I wouldn't be able to with my smaller chest. She ended up teaching me how to and it changed everything. We started hiking together regularly and it was so nice that we could both just loosen, latch and keep going everytime one of our babies became hungry. It was something that made my postpartum experience so much better. But, I know it's not possible for everyone and that's ok! There are still other things you can do. If you have pumped milk or formula and the ability to carry it safely along, that could be a great option. I like using teethers or small toys to help keep them occupied. Talking or singing to baby. Playing little games and being silly, etc. It's all about finding what works for you and your little one. I find having some time looking outward really helps as well. My baby was so upset on this hike until I turned him outwards facing for a bit. He enjoyed having time to engage with the world and then went back to facing me when done! It was so nice to have the explore so he could do that for a bit. If you love getting out with your baby, what helps keep them happy the longest? Hopefully another parent can use some of the tips!
