@jonjon.jpeg: Skatepark DIYs are a fascinating case study in how cities are built. They are made without permission to serve a very specific need. A city can fight against them, ignore them, or fully embrace and support them. In the same way, our cities have become antiseptic in part because we do not allow the gritty work of small-scale development from people who are building for their own survival. Just as a skatepark is often forbidden out of liability or concerns about safety, we do the same thing when it comes to small businesses or housing. But what if we embraced this small-change mentality? Not by allowing things that are completely unsafe or by looking the other way, but by thinking about how we could make what people have started better and safer. By supporting these ambitions, we can lower the first rung of survival and success in our towns. This is how our towns were first formed. In biology, when life begins to return to an ecosystem it is called succession. This is how our towns can be re-formed as well. In biology, this is referred to as secondary succession. Our cities have been gutted, and they need to be infilled. The best infill will be that built by the community for the community, in the same way that DIYs are built by skaters for skaters. #Skateboarding #urbanism #urbandesign #cityplanning #skatepark

it's a shame that pioneer species get less represented in a mature ecosystem (gentrification?), but they're always ready to jump in where needed 💪

This is so good. This is exactly why my town has nothing but ugly corporate chain stores

As a biology teacher, I loved the succession analogy.

Jacksonville had an abandoned construction dumping area underneath the I-95/ I-10 interchange that skaters were using. Initially the city punished them, then they decided to turn it into an official skatepark. It's really cool and one of the few places you can skate without worrying about sunburn or getting rained on.

It seems like they build a new on here in Portland every year. They turned an unused tennis court into a skate park and now the city decided to go ahead and make it official

Great explanation. I put up sculptures in public places. Most they leave up but not always. It helps to find the right conditions. Luck helps too.
