@oldloserinbrooklyn: The unspoken price of working in fashion and other creative industries. I’m grateful for the conversation the cutting room floor sparked but there is a heavier price than just salary that you pay to succeed in the fashion industry. #fashionjob #fashionindustry
It’s the cool tax. If you tell someone what you do at a party and they respond with “oh that’s so cool!” Then you aren’t making money

My problem is real established companies like Condé has so many openings around the same price like why are they coming for her specifically

I don’t know, I started in fashion at an entry level role at $47k and less than 10 years later I outearn all my friends and make as much as my husband who is in STEM. I wish I made more at the start (esp as someone supporting myself) but it didn’t last long

I work in music and it’s the same. Swap out body image with substance abuse.

No amount of free samples will make for the disparity in pay

Do you think this is the case because fashion favors people with privilege and don’t actually need a high pay?

:: sigh :: this is why I’m stuck in the role I’m in now, because other places don’t even offer the same salary but want to add the roles of 3 for the salary of one in their responsibilities 😩

Same in journalism… any creative industry they expect you to be grateful for the exposure and experience meanwhile you’re barely making rent,

Reason why I gave up on being a stylist … unless there is generational wealth it was unsustainable for me to live in a big city and be expected to work for free , having to have 3 other non fashion jobs to be able to sustain myself and my projects 😵💫

I worked in fashion for 12 years, and feel I have nothing to really show for it. The industry sucks. I’m now in tech and while I have stability I miss being around creative people. It feels soul draining. I would rather be in fashion but it does not pay well!

It’s high time that creatives are respected and paid appropriately no matter what level they are at. The ones at the top need to stop pedaling the “I had it hard so you should too” nonsense and PAY PEOPLE. Not to mention allllll the free ideas they steal from their lower leveled employees and make MILLIONS off of while that employee is struggling to feed themselves

It’s interesting. I feel like there’s the same convo in the non profit space. You’re supposed to do it for passion and caring about the mission

Thank you thank you thank you!! As much as I love the industry after internships in college, it was clear to me without a safety net starting in capital F fashion was not a financial option and would be a majorly impact my mental health. I started my career in tech for this exact reason and am now trying to get into fashion with now a bit of stability and a safety net but there is such a bias on background and the company your work for

I have worked in sports, nonprofit and fashion - the exploitation in ALL THREE is crazy. I’m in tech now and it’s not easy, I miss the creative work I was doing, but I’m paid well and have healthcare. But I need to live!!

It’s crazy because it starts from inception. I was a hs student from a low income, single parent family and I got into parsons and FIT absolutely no financial aid given so I had to give up my dream of going to fashion school for nyu where I got a full ride which is actually unheard for for NYU. I kept trying to break into the fashion industry but I couldn’t afford to take a 3 day UNPAID internship

The longer you go and older you get, at some point your “outsider”-ness becomes a badge of honor. The shade now is directly correlated to jealousy — you have done this and achieved everything on your own, in your own way. It makes others who are insecure feel like they may be frauds.

In fashion and design school there was this idea of “paying your dues” by working for free or for very little for a decent amount of time. It’s super toxic and built for people who have familial wealth to support them for what can be a really long time before you get paid well or at all.

I remember my first fashion job, 2010 I think. 25k A YEAR. worked 9am - 10pm frequently. Lost 15lbs in less than a year without trying. Cried frequently because bosses were horrible. Remember feeling “so lucky” to have the opportunity.

I’ve been working in design and PD for 15 years and oh man, this felt validating lol the industry has changed so much in the last decade but one thing hasn’t - exploitation.

But it’s also because the salaries at the top are bloated, so there is less to pay people in the middle and bottom sustainably
