At the heart of this struggle stood a young man from a humble background — Belay Zeleke, riding his fearless horse Aba Koster. With unmatched bravery and charisma, Belay rallied thousands of patriots in Gojjam. Farmers, monks, and villagers joined him, turning the highlands into a battlefield the Italians could never fully control. Mounted on Aba Koster, he struck fast and vanished into the mountains, leaving the occupiers in fear. 📌 His tactics were simple but devastating ambushing Italian convoys in the narrow passes of Gojjam, capturing modern weapons from the enemy and turning them back against them, and refusing to surrender even when heavily outnumbered. The mountains were his shield, Aba Koster his companion, and surprise his greatest weapon. ⚔️ Famous victory: Belay Zeleke’s patriots crushed Italian forces in several key battles, keeping much of Gojjam free from foreign rule. For years, his defiance kept the fire of resistance alive. But his story ended in tragedy. After liberation, the central government saw Belay as too powerful and independent. In 1945, he was arrested on political charges and publicly hanged in Addis Ababa.
