@c4news: 81-year-old Hannah Dankwa, who has cancer, has found herself stranded after taking a trip to see family in Ghana because of what's being described as an 'irregularity' over her date of birth. Seven years after the Windrush scandal came to light it seems some people from Commonwealth countries who were invited by the government to live and work here in the post war period are still having their British nationality challenged. A Home Office spokesperson said: “While we do not comment on individual passport applications, a passport is only issued once all checks are satisfactorily completed.” The Windrush Commissioner said: "This case highlights a broader and troubling issue: people from Commonwealth countries may find themselves stranded abroad, unable to prove their lawful right to live in the UK. In line with the recommendations of the Wendy Williams Review, I urge the Home Office to respond to such cases, particularly those involving older people and individuals with serious medical conditions, with urgency, compassion and humanity." #Ghana #Windrush #Commonwealth #C4News

Imagine being a british citizen, pouring into a country, working honestly and paying taxes for 60 years, to be locked out of your own country. The UK government and Home Office should be soo ashamed.

She is a British Subject under the old British law which was changed in the early 70s. Her family should have been renewing those documents before encouraging to travel. This problem was a huge mess called The Windrush generation. Lots were deported.

It happened to me despite being born in the UK way before 1983. They refused to issue me a new passport in Ghana when I was 17 and wanted to return back to the UK. I was told to go apply for a Ghana passport. I refused and fought my case out with them My parents had divorced and out of Ghana so it took.the UK embassy over 10 years to finally issue me my passport with the same documents I gave to them from day one. I feel.like I was racially discriminated against because I am black. If I had White skin, I would've been.issued the passport in weeks. I still feel hurt and disappointed by how I was treated because I lost many years and opportunities because of their actions. I was a very good goalkeeper and could've made it just like I made it playing football in Ghana.

She's definitely done something wrong. The Windrush generation turned up uninvited anyway so she has no legitimate argument to be allowed back.

I don’t think this is relevant to her documents. My friends dad did the same thing. He went to Bangladesh after being diagnosed with cancer to say his final goodbye to his family. When he tried to return back to UK they would t let him fly due to his health condition and refused to be responsible should something happen. My friend and her family spent 80k to get back. Where he died two weeks later

This should be a lesson to us Africans . When travel make preparation back home because that is where you belong. The British passport can be revoked anytime but your race from Ghana can never be taken from you.

I still don’t understand over 40 years in the UK you don’t have British passport. If she had a British passport, this would not happen. I know when you are retired, you can get a British passport without taking a test. Over 60 old.
