@cspanofficial: White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Thursday said President Trump fired CDC Director Susan Monarez because she was "not aligned" with his agenda. "Her lawyers' statement made it abundantly clear themselves that she was not aligned with the president's mission to make America healthy again," she told reporters. The Health and Human Services Department said late Wednesday night that Ms. Monarez, who was sworn in less than a month ago, had been dismissed. Her attorneys, however, insisted that she remained head of the CDC until she was fired directly by the president. "When CDC Director Susan Monarez refused to rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives and fire dedicated health experts, she chose protecting the public over serving a political agenda," her lawyers wrote in a statement. "For that reason, she has been targeted." Ms. Leavitt said Ms. Monarez was subsequently fired by the president, "which he has every right to do." "This woman has never received a vote in her life, and the president has the authority to fire those who are not aligned with his mission," she said.
