They’ll say that the paladins smite was broken and then let the monk potentially get 5d12+35 force damage off in one turn for the cost of a single focus point (out of 20) and they’ve got a +13 to hit

CR is so weird. A banshee is a CR 4 in 5e, but can wipe a party with one attack. My thought process was, "Hey there are four level 6 characters to fight this thing, it should be fine." Spoiler alert: It wasn't.

If I ever play the new edition. I will be ignoring the smite rules altogether, sorry but that’s what paladins do. My players wanna feel powerful in an instant at times due to not having time to set up big stuff all the time. So yes, smites on hit will always be at my table.
