This might be the best book I've ever read. Now I'm not saying it's my new FAVORITE book, because in my opinion those are two different things, but with that said I absolutely did love it. So what is the book and why did I think it's so great? It's Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter, and this book completely surprised me. NYRB rarely misses, but even still, I wasn't expecting to be absolutely blown away by this hidden gem of American Literature, and it's a book I hardly ever see talked about online. In Hard Rain Falling, which was Carpenter's debut, he tackles so many difficult topics, from racism, class struggle, misogyny, masculinity, gay romance, and so much more. All of this is packed into 300ish engaging pages with rich, complicated characters and beautifully natural feeling dialogue. I honestly can't think of another debut novel that packs this much punch than my favorite book, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. Carpenter and Heller also had something else in common: neither really saw the success or fame that they deserved, and there's little mention of either's work beyond their debuts.
