I heard someone say that seeing the defendant's "innocent doe-eyed face" was utterly redundant due to latter descriptions and shouldn't have been included, but my take is that it indeed was- what does the fact the boy was 18 says? That he grew up in the slums? That doesn't mean people wouldn't imagine a rugged, mad young man, especially if we're to account it is mentioned he was oftentimes abused- that might result in a try to look more intimidating on his side. I think it was to an extent important to have the viewers -especially back in the 50s- have a scared, even frail boy in their minds as they then witness the discussion of the jurors.
