I am positive this goes hand in hand with the death of critical thinking as a subject expertise that is taught in schools. It's by design - those in power prefer a weak populace that doesn't question them. People poke fun at humanities degree such as lit theory, and philosophy but the growth you receive from those is unmatched. You can have all of the book knowledge you want but without critical thinking, it's worthless. Revive critical thinking and the rest will follow. I'm a former evangelical homeschooler and now have a B.A. in English from a state school and a master's degree. That humanities foundation was crucial in my growth out of those harmful ways of thinking. That's why universities/education is under attack. They see the writing on the wall and they're scared.

My question is when did people become so entitled to their opinions — what triggered this and why did we throw away critical discourse? Or was critical discourse only for a certain subgroup and then with the rise of social everyone felt it was their turn and right to now be the “critic”?

In my MFA program we did 3 whole hours of critique on ONE piece. It seems so arbitrary but once ur out of artschool ur like oh that was actually invaluable. Proper critique with a dedicated group is so hard to find outside of art school 😭

Philosophy major here. Yes. 100%. You should look into Mouffe and her distinction between agonism and antagonism, she’s a modern philosopher and I’ve found her quite insightful to the situation we find ourselves in.

Absolutely true. People seem to forget opinion is the lowest form of knowledge. It requires no accountability and no understanding. Subjective experience does not override objective reality. Truth is truth there is no your truth or my truth. Everyone having a voice isn’t democratic it means none of us do.

Perfectly encapsulates the fan versus critic fever pitch we’ve been witnessing lately. I love how you highlighted “online silly discourse” as a reasoning to reject constructive criticism and frame criticism as frivolous and unnecessary under the guise of “hate”! The way fanbases are now almost trained now to discredit and dismantle critics is wild, even the fair criticism from fans get that villian of the weak treatment. I absolutely love that you came across my feed and so excited to read more of your work!

it's really frustrating because critique is one of the ways I engage with things I am a fan of. it feels like a sign of respect to go beyond a surface reaction to something. but except for a handful of close friends, most people interpret any form of critique (even when it's generally positive) as a negative reaction to a thing, can't handle the idea of anybody not liking the thing that they've had such an emotional reaction to

what makes me 😐 on apps like TikTok or Twitter, someone will post an opinion and anything but praise is asking for a fight. so even if a reply agrees with them entirely, if the replier dares to add their own opinion ("I agree, I also think that--") the OP will act as if that reply is putting words in their mouth or saying their opinion is wrong. when the reply is simply trying to continue what they thought was a discussion! which discourages people from trying to converse online at all.

I think there’s demand for good criticism, but legacy media has dropped the ball. Substack is one of a few places that is fighting this. A great piece I read recently was The Painted Protest by Dean Kissick (pub. in Harper’s) which is in my opinion an interesting discussion about contemporary art that we are just not having as much through mainstream channels right now

my pet peeve is when it's obvious that the critique is designed to take down the artist while not even offering a possibility for redemption. they can never get it "right" no matter what. no room for growth. that's just being snarky.

I think another aspect of it is that within critique in art school it’s a panel/room of your peers and/or professors. You’re in actual community with the people critiquing your work which contributes to the civility of the discussion. You’re invested in pushing each other in a constructive vs “takedown” sort of way
