everyone in thg is a product of their circumstances. And i mean EVERYONE, even snow. And before anyone disagrees, collins would not write a book to tackle the philosophical question of human nature without a power over them and NOT want us to come to the realisation that even snow’s awfulness was fueled by his circumstances

THANK YOU bc people hate gale more than snow, it's insane- they're saying "oh gale would immediately kill katniss if he was reaped" NO HE WOULDNT????? if anything he'd sacrifice himself for her.... he's very annoying, yes, but he's a product of his environment, if katniss didn't have prim she'd probably be as helpless and vengeful as him

That’s false comparison and him and katniss exactly argued that it’s not the same her being in the games and what she did to survive vs what Gale wanted to do, which is to copy Snow when he made the bombs. it’s a disconnect or say he didn’t authorize or he didn’t know the rebels would use it that way when his bombs were used exactly how he designed them, he didn’t design them a theoretical fun side project, it was created for the rebels to use in the war. He also had a direct communication with coin, he wasn’t “groomed” like that’s not what the word means. He even argued in district 2, where he had a say in a war room, on how to bomb the Nut, and he practically told Katniss, “go ahead tell Coin, she will agree with me!”when katniss argued with him what he’s doing is wrong. Like that was whole conflict between Gale and Katniss, and pretending Gale is a victim when he made decisions all on his own and justified them to katniss. Like pretending there’s no direct line to Gale creating the bomb and to prim’s murder takes a lot of mental gymnastics

he was easily made a war pawn, he wouldnt ever do that knowing it would cause prims death but also katniss is allowed to feel a type of way about it its cool how realistic she was able to write these characters choices and reactions and feelings

he’s even Less to blame. they used his talents that he acquired to keep his family alive in order to create weapons when he was just a teenager!! he didn’t order those bombs to be dropped he simply had a small part in designing them. he was annoying at times but i will always be a gale defender

I also think people forget that he was still barely an adult during the peak of the revolution. He was a teenager trying to overthrow the tyrannical government that has taken his home, tortured him and destroyed everything he loved. I’m not condoning his actions, but people love to pretend that he was just some guy who wanted to kill people for no reason , he was literally willing to die for the sake of the success of this.

Thank you!! Gale definitely had more of a black and white view of the situation than Katniss and Peeta did for example, but I think it's still pretty understandable given that he was young and that he and his loved ones were at the bottom of the food chain in Panem for so long, and lost so much ( and I also think that Katniss and Peeta interacting with people such as Cinna and Portia helped give them a more nuanced POV) Is he an amazing dude? Definitely not... Is he a villain though? Also no (not to mention that people rarely ever give that same energy to Beetee, a grown man -and yes, his trauma was more atrocious, but still)

Do I like Gale? Not really past the first book. Did he treat Katniss in ways she didn’t deserve? Absolutely. But he was a victim the same as everyone else. He watched his entire community literally burn around him. The things he said about the Capitol weren’t necessarily morally right, but they were extremely understandable.
