I think it should be “hai mm hai”, like “are you or are you not”. When it’s spoken fast, could sound like “hai mai”, but def never heard of “hai mee” or “hai mi”

I think your toisan mixes in when you’re speaking Cantonese. In taishanese I have heard hai mee before. But in Cantonese it is hai mm hai

Hai mi is often used in Taishanese, your family probably has someone from Taishan. So your broken canto plus broken Taishanese is hard for a lot of people to understand 😂, but dw I understand you. But ppl usually just ask “中国人啊？”
