@blackonblacked: Teachers get real confused about the difference between accountability and punishment. In my classroom, I focus on holding students responsible for their actions by requiring that they do what was expected of them. This summer at Teaching Black History Conference I led a workshop, Liberated Learning: Centering Black Student Voice to Build Joyful, Rigorous, and Liberating Classrooms, to help educators focus on how they teach instead of what they teach at a time where out work is being politicized and scrutinized. The full PD is available for members of the Liberation Library. THE online community for educators fighting the system from the inside.
Aka the space for educators that know the system is broken but refuse to just sit around for 180 days and not show the f*ck up for their kids but instead stand ten toes down on building a classroom community centered around care, joy, and sustainability. Comment LIBERATION so I can DM you the link to join that community for $44/month (if you are reading this at Tik Tok check out the link in my bio) and get monthly group coaching calls to work through the challenges that come up in your classroom, a community of educators that get it, and weekly audio drops to all year long.

How about we keep them where they are until they actually learn what they are supposed to learn? Let them spend 6 years in 7th grade until they learn the content and the behavioral expectations

I know it sounds cheesy as hell but lowkey the relationship thing does work to an extent. I’ve seen some of our toughest students think about and stop doing something cause they didn’t want to upset me cause they know I care about them. I KNOW we have breaking points and it doesn’t work with all trust me I have some idk what we are gonna do with them. But I have others I feel like I’m making breakthroughs with. I guess I’m saying it’s worth trying. Also finding something they do care about lol, they ALL care about something even if it’s minuscule. (No im not an expert and NO I don’t have all the answers, just sharing what worked for me lol)

Well the flip side would be if given a zero and they don’t care, once their parents find out, the student should definitely care then. Maybe parents need to be……

You can’t make a student care, but you can annoy them into compliance. A child who tried to run down the hallway, but make them stand by you and wait for 45 seconds. They won’t care, but they will be annoyed. And usually they won’t run by you again all year. 😂

Reflection sheets are a joke and should never be used. The only way they’re useful is if the idea of reflection has been explicitly taught and students have complete buy-in to the system (which good luck with that).

kids enjoy their time and their privacy, making them sit next to you and have them read the slides and do all the little chores for you, then stop the upcoming week they either won't disrupt or ask why you stopped asking them for help ,smile and give them a task unfortunately the answer is consequences and forgiveness

It's not for them to care, it's about the other kids not taking on their traits.

honestly I show them I care I made my class project based learning for this exact reason since I teach inner School and they have to sit down and actually make the poster make the images and present them to their peers and when they say I just don't care and they would sit there and do nothing I'd pull up next to him and I would start working on it and then I would ask them leaving questions like how would they design it what's their favorite color just to get them talking if they didn't answer that I'd ask him some basic SEL questions or I just talk about myself and then once I got them talking usually they pick up a pencil maybe not do it all but they would do something and once I got the kid doing something then I'd be able to put them in groups and then they would kind of hold each other accountable and be able to have a friend and learn to communicate and learn why things that seem trivial matter

Why did people fall for the broad Generalization, that "they don't care" as if it's a universal truth that encapsulates all students. the assumption is made in order to erase whatever status quo or paradigm. in fact, many students do not care to have a detention. Many students don't like having zeros, and if they don't care, perhaps one should focus on building, better culture and relevance Instead of looking for different ways to "have accountability"

Building relationships is a method, understanding why they are apathetic and learning what troubles they have at home or socially. Bring parents in to get a deeper understanding. Pointing to resources, mental health etc. possibly depressed

can you explain prescription drive or do a video in like tag me in it because myself and a few officers and then a school resource officer we're discussing this and each kind of had their own subjective approach to it and when my law students looked up case law for it it was very kind of subjective and as someone who has to take prescription medications and there are millions of us in the world what constitutes of violation or what types of medicines no matter what would get you a violation

Guess what I don’t care either-just sit over there and keep your mouth shut and I’ll teach the ones who do care. Don’t care if they turn things in…dont care if they come to school or if they are late. I put my energy into the good ones….
