@highmaintenance_chels: Anytime the cowling is off, it’s an opportunity to give the entire engine, and every system a once-over. I also take before-and-after pictures of every project. This 172 had just been purchased for a flight school with a newly overhauled engine. During my initial inspection, I found several unsatisfactory items—but two stood out: missing safety wire, and a loose fuel fitting. The loose hose was between the gascolator to the fuel flow transducer. Left uncorrected, it could have caused an in-flight engine failure. Since fuel evaporates so quickly the blue dye is a wonderful aid in finding issues, and leaks - painting us a story, if we are paying attention. Then there’s the Vernatherm—a temperature-sensitive, wax-filled bypass valve that regulates oil flow to the cooler. It’s designed to “fail safe,” bypassing the cooler if it stops working. But if it falls out altogether, due to missing safety wire, the pilot would likely notice the smell of oil first… followed by rising oil temps, falling oil pressure, and ultimately, engine failure from oil starvation.
